First Visits: Children

Start Your Child on the Path to a Healthy Mouth for Life

Nothing’s more important than giving your child the best start in life. We feel the same about your child’s dental health. To protect your child’s teeth — and establish healthy hygiene habits early — Dr. Harris wants to see your child by his first birthday. We get excited about dental care! We want your child to also. So we work hard to make sure every visit is fun and friendly.

When your baby cuts her first baby tooth, it’s a milestone! You take pictures. You call grandparents. You should also set up your baby’s first visit. The ideal time is within 6 months after that tooth pops up, and no later than another big day — her first birthday. We’ll show you how to clean her teeth and we’ll check for any problems. Even baby teeth can get cavities, which can damage the permanent teeth forming under the gums if they’re not treated.

During the toddler years, Dr. Harris will do more during his exam — like a first cleaning. We can talk about potential problems related to habits like thumb sucking. We’ve seen plenty of early walkers who chip baby teeth when they take a tumble, too. So it’s good to have Dr. Harris in your corner.

Strong, healthy baby teeth will help your child learn and grow. How? They help her chew all those new foods and pronounce all those new words. As she ages, we’ll evaluate how her teeth are coming in and look at crowding or spacing issues. We’ll also review ways you can protect her teeth in addition to brushing and flossing — like fluoride treatments and dental sealants.

So, back to the first visit. Here’s what we recommend to help make every visit a good one for your child:

  • Schedule an appointment when he’s rested and in a good mood — like morning
  • Keep your anxiety about dental visits to yourself — emphasize the positive instead!
  • Bring a lovey to give your child extra security
  • Talk about what he will see — like a cool chair, shiny tools, pictures on the ceiling, and Dr. Harris’ friendly face

When you bring your baby to Dr. Harris’ office, you’re giving her an important head start on dental health that will last into adulthood. We look forward to being your partner in giving your child a healthy mouth for life!

Each time I come in to see Dr. Harris, I’m amazed at how great the experience is. I’ve had lots of dental work done in my lifetime and I’ve never seen a dentist and staff so dedicated to the comfort and relaxation of the patient. I’m so glad my husband and I found this dental practice!
